The Nile Crocodile
on Wednesday, August 03, 2011

The Nile crocodile is the crocodile of Africa. It can swim swiftly and quickly. It also has a unique way of running on land called the "crocodile gallop". The Nile crocodile has a bite that has the same amount of force as you wearing a school bus as a hat! When catching prey, this crocodile lays still in the water, waiting for buffalo, zebras, or other animals that come to the water to drink. When they come, the crocodile bites one on the neck and hauls it into the water. When the animal is dead, the crocodile rips off chunks of meat and swallows them whole. Crocodiles have lots of teeth, but they don't use them to chew. They have a special digestive system to break down the meat they eat.

Though you might think that Nile crocodiles are scary and mean, the mothers are actually really caring for her babies and eggs. She lays her eggs in a hole that she digs. She guards them day and night from predators like big lizards. The eggs would form into girls or boys depending on the temperature underground. When the babies hatch they make a call that lets their mother know they hatched. Then the mother digs up the babies and puts as many as she can in her mouth. She doesn't eat them though, she takes them to the water and releases them. Then she returns to her nest and takes the rest of her babies to the water and guards them from predators like honey badgers and storks.
