The Journey Of The Monarch Butterflies
on Thursday, August 11, 2011

Everyone would usually expect all butterflies to be soft, lazy and helpless. Oh, but what about the monarch butterfly? They go on a great journey from Mexico to Canada. That means they are migrating. Let me  explain to you how this works: In Mexico, the butterflies mate with each other, lay eggs, and die. Then, monarch caterpillars hatch from the eggs and eat milkweed. They eat more and more and more milkweed until they are much larger. Then they form into a cocoon. Inside, the monarch transforms from caterpillar to butterfly. Then the butterfly comes out of the cocoon with wet and curled wings. Then the butterfly waits for it's wings to dry and uncurl. Then butterflies continue. Then that repeats three more times and then the butterflies would have reached Canada. Then the butterflies fly all the way back to Mexico. If you live in Mexico, North America, or Canada and want to give monarch butterflies food, grow some milkweed in your garden or yard. Monarch butterflies will come!
