The Lyre Bird
on Sunday, August 21, 2011

Lyre birds are a kind of endangered species of bird. The reason they are called the "lyre" bird is because the male's tail looks like the ancient instrument-the lyre. Lyre birds are able to fly, but they prefer walking and running on their legs. Male lyre birds have a tail that they use to attract females. It's hard to explain what it looks like so just look at the picture. The tail would spread out and go over the bird's body like an umbrella. Then it starts to copy other bird's songs. It can even copy a human sound! They do this to attract a female to mate with. To out sing his rivals, he will copy other sounds like a camera clicking, a recorded person singing, or a construction.
